Sjögren's
Overview
Sjögren's syndrome (also referred to as Sjögren's disease) is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's moisture-producing glands, primarily the glands responsible for tears and saliva. This leads to the condition's hallmark symptoms: persistent dry eyes and dry mouth, also known as sicca symptoms. While glandular dryness is the most recognizable feature, Sjögren's is a systemic disease that can affect the joints, skin, lungs, kidneys, nerves and other organs in a meaningful portion of patients.
Sjögren's syndrome can occur on its own, known as primary Sjögren's syndrome, or alongside another autoimmune condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, known as secondary Sjögren's syndrome. It is a lifelong condition with no cure, but with proper management, most people are able to control symptoms and maintain a good quality of life.
