With the recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of Foundayo (orforglipron), patients now have a new option for weight loss that doesn’t involve injections. According to nurse practitioner Rachael Sood, NP-C, this once-daily pill could be a meaningful alternative, especially for those hesitant about needles or looking for a more gradual approach to weight management.
Unlike traditional GLP-1 medications that are injected weekly, Foundayo is a non-peptide oral medication, meaning it doesn’t require special timing with food or water. Patients can take it at any time of day, making it easier to fit into daily routines. This flexibility may also improve consistency, which is key for building long-term habits around eating and weight management.
Sood explains that the medication works similarly to other GLP-1 therapies by helping regulate appetite and portion control. However, it tends to build up in the body over about a week, with a shorter duration of action compared with weekly injections. Because of this, she describes it as a “gentler” entry point — ideal for patients who want to ease into treatment rather than start with a more potent or fast-acting option.
Patients typically begin on a low dose that is gradually increased over time. Weight loss may begin within the first four to six weeks, with results comparable to other GLP-1 medications, though not as rapid. For many patients, this slower pace may actually be beneficial, allowing for sustainable lifestyle changes rather than dramatic, hard-to-maintain results.
As with other medications in this class, side effects are most commonly related to the digestive system. These can include nausea, acid reflux, constipation or general stomach discomfort. Some patients may also experience fatigue. These symptoms are usually mild and tend to improve within the first month. Sood emphasizes the importance of communicating with a health care provider if side effects occur, as they can often be managed or adjusted.
Sood sees Foundayo as an exciting addition to the weight loss landscape — particularly for individuals looking to reduce their risk of conditions like Type 2 diabetes or heart disease. While it may not replace existing treatments, it offers a new, accessible option that prioritizes flexibility, gradual progress and long-term habit formation.
