The EczemaWise app, developed by the National Eczema Association, is a free, user-friendly mobile tool designed to help patients and caregivers manage eczema more effectively by tracking symptoms, flares, triggers and treatment progress over time. Joy Wan, M.D., a dermatologist and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University, explains that the app offers a powerful way for people with eczema to document and understand their condition more clearly — especially between visits to their health care providers.

Eczema is a chronic, fluctuating skin disease, meaning symptoms can change rapidly — sometimes even within a single day. Because of this variability, a patient’s condition during a doctor’s appointment may not accurately reflect the severity or frequency of symptoms they’ve experienced. The EczemaWise app helps fill that gap by allowing users to log symptoms daily, take photos of flare-ups, and record sleep issues, emotional impact and other health factors. This consistent tracking enables patients to bring objective, long-term data to their medical visits, resulting in more informed and personalized care.

One of the app’s most valuable features is the ability to track potential triggers, such as weather changes, new skin products or stress. Over time, patients can use this data to recognize patterns — for example, flares that consistently follow certain exposures — and discuss those findings with their doctors. This empowers patients to take a more active role in understanding their disease and guiding treatment.

The app is also designed for convenience and ease of use. Unlike traditional paper journals, EczemaWise converts patient entries into graphs and summaries, offering a visual overview of how symptoms have evolved. This makes it easier for both patients and providers to see progress or identify setbacks. Additionally, the app includes educational materials on current treatment options, helping patients stay informed and engaged in their care.

Wan highlights how EczemaWise facilitates shared decision-making, helping patients and doctors have more meaningful conversations based on real-world data, not just what’s visible during an appointment. Ultimately, the app provides a structured, eczema-specific platform that supports self-awareness, symptom control and better communication between patients and health care providers — leading to improved long-term management of this often burdensome condition.
