World Asthma Day is observed annually on the first Tuesday in May. It is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to raise awareness, improve asthma care and reduce the global burden of this chronic disease. Asthma affects more than 260 million people worldwide and is a leading cause of missed school and work days, preventable emergency room visits and avoidable deaths—particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Why Asthma Awareness Matters
Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. It causes recurring episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing. While there is no cure, asthma can be effectively managed with medication, education and environmental control. Raising awareness on World Asthma Day helps reduce stigma, improve early diagnosis and promote global access to care.
Who Is Most at Risk for Asthma?
Asthma often begins in childhood, but it can develop later in life. People with a family history of asthma, those exposed to air pollution or tobacco smoke, and individuals with allergies are at higher risk. In some low- and middle-income countries, asthma may be underdiagnosed or undertreated, leading to preventable hospitalizations and deaths. Health equity is a central theme of World Asthma Day and highlights the need for improved access to asthma education and care in underserved communities.
Despite its prevalence, asthma remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. Understanding what asthma is, how it presents and how to manage it can lead to better health outcomes for those living with the disease. Whether you or a loved one has asthma, or you simply want to learn more, this quiz offers a way to test your knowledge on key facts, common myths, treatment options and public health issues surrounding asthma care.
