Cushing syndrome, also known as hypercortisolism, is a hormonal disorder caused by prolonged exposure of the body's tissues to high levels of the hormone cortisol. This condition can be caused by taking glucocorticoid medications or by diseases that result in the body producing too much cortisol.
Cortisol plays a vital role in various bodily functions, including regulating metabolism, reducing inflammation, and controlling the sleep/wake cycle. When the body's cortisol levels are abnormally high, it can lead to numerous health complications.
