The Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op has announced a recall of several of its cheeses due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacteria can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections, especially in young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.
The recall includes the following:
- 100% Grass-Fed Pepper Jack Cheese (8-ounce packages, 5-pound and 40-pound loaves, Lot Code 251661)
- Horseradish Flavored Cheese (8-ounce packages, Lot Code 2524061)
- Monterey Jack Cheese (8-ounce packages, 5-pound and 40-pound blocks, Lot Code 251672 or date code 7-16-25B)
- Farmers Cheese (8-ounce packages, 5-pound and 40-pound blocks, Lot Code 251672 or date code 7-16-25B)
- Some packages were also sold under the Copia Collective brand.
These cheeses were produced in June and July 2025 and distributed in Ohio between July 14 and Aug. 7, 2025.
Listeria infection can cause high fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. In pregnant women, it can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth. While healthy individuals may only experience short-term illness, the infection can be extremely dangerous for vulnerable groups.
Check your fridge for the recalled cheeses and look for the lot codes on the package. Do not eat the recalled products. Customers can dispose of them safely or return them to the store for a refund. If you have eaten the recalled cheese and develop symptoms of listeria infection, contact your health care provider right away.
The company says no illnesses have been reported so far. Production has been stopped while the source of contamination is investigated.
