For patient advocate Kyreé Miller, the road to a heart transplant was sudden, intense and life-altering. Multiple trips to the emergency room initially felt routine, until one day doctors made the decision to transfer him by ambulance from one Boston hospital to another. The situation had become critical, and the possibility of a heart transplant was placed on the table. With little time to process fear, Kyreé shifted into survival mode, focusing on the next steps instead of the uncertainty ahead. That mindset became a powerful coping tool — one that carried him through some of the most challenging moments of his life.

Rather than allowing fear to consume him, Kyreé chose resilience and determination. He learned to adapt quickly, viewing each change in direction as a necessary pivot on the path forward. Holding on to hope became essential, and he believes that without it, his outcome could have been very different. Today, he sees hope not only as a feeling but as an active choice — one that people can make even in the darkest moments.

Before his transplant, Kyreé was extremely private and felt pressure to present a polished image to the world. That perspective shifted dramatically after his experience in the health care system. He recognized how many people feel isolated during serious illness and began sharing his story to remind others that they are not alone. Now, he regularly visits hospital centers to encourage patients who are struggling, reminding them that healing is possible and that showing up for themselves, even in small ways, can make a powerful difference in recovery.

Kyreé also emphasizes the importance of being an active participant in one’s own care. Early in his journey, conversations about his treatment took place without him in the room. Over time, he learned to speak up, to ask questions and to insist on being part of the discussion. That shift transformed his relationship with his medical team into a true partnership, strengthening both communication and trust.

As a Black man navigating the health care system, Kyreé is keenly aware of the disparities that exist. His visibility as a survivor and advocate is a reminder to others that thriving is possible, even in a system that does not always feel built for them.

Looking ahead, Kyreé envisions a full and joyful life, including a return to acting and public speaking. His definition of success is rooted not in material wealth but in the ability to breathe, love and remain present. Every smile he carries is a testament to his journey — and a message to others that no one can take that joy away.
