In an interview with The Educated Patient, Nicole Chenard, MS, RD, LDN, dispels some of the most common myths about diet and nutrition, one of which is that there's a single best diet for everyone at any given time. This misconception often arises due to marketing, commercials and a general lack of nutrition education.
Many people believe that by following a specific diet—such as the Mediterranean, ketogenic or Paleo diet—all their problems will disappear. However, she emphasizes, this isn't true. Each person's needs are unique, and what works for one might not work for another.
Chenard says people often get hooked on solutions through compelling stories in commercials, but it's important to ask: Is someone trying to sell you something? Is there really a solution? Often, after a detailed conversation, her patients realize that the diet they thought was working well is actually causing unnecessary frustration and even weight gain.
When seeking health advice, she warns people to be wary of red flags—claims of quick fixes or miracle solutions. Just because someone is a well-known doctor or health professional doesn't mean their advice is right for you. Always consider their credibility, background and who is funding their advice.
It’s not just about what you're consuming in terms of food, but also where your information is coming from. Chenard explains that social media platforms often present health information based on algorithms, not personalized needs. While there can be useful content, there's also a lot of misleading advice, such as ads claiming certain foods are harmful without scientific evidence.
Finally, diet isn't the only factor in health.
“We think that diet is the answer, but I spend most of my sessions as a dietitian not talking about food,” she says.
Often, she finds herself discussing environmental influences, relationships and lifestyle factors more than food itself. Your environment, who influences you and what you tell yourself daily all play significant roles in your well-being. It's about finding balance and nourishing yourself in all aspects, not just through diet.
